Summer is...

No cuela.

When we’re kids, after spending more than one hour playing in the sea, the most waited for moment is la merienda (an afternoon snack which usually consists on a sandwich made of baguette bread). We classify it on the second position of the list of beachy priorities because:

1.       We’ve had lunch between 1 or 2 pm more or less, but our moms make us to wait for 3 HOURS TO LET THE LUNCH GO DOWN before get the toes wet.
2.       Then it’s when we’re ready for getting soaked and steeped in the water after several failed attempts of setting mom’s watch forward or lied to her about your best friend just went to the sea and ended with lunch at three o’clock. She never believes us.
3.       Three hours of waiting after lunch plus at least one hour inside the water equals canine starvation.

So we’re more than ready for gulping that blessed baguette. There is such hole in the stomach that repels any type of healthy food like a banana, some juice, melon, etc. What my body was desiring on that time was a real bocadillo, like a flute, in baguette bread or something similar. My first favorite had chorizo inside, followed by chocolate piece and Nocilla (the Spanish Nutella). When mom filled it with cooked ham slices… that was boring sandwich.

Time inhibit us and we stop to put la merienda into the beach backpack. I skipped this phase for a while ‘cause my sister Andrea was still too little so she used to carry the afternoon snack and there was half left in the end.

But now there is no way of appropriating of other people’s sandwiches… or there is. If you happen to be at a totally deserted beach, forget about it. The only thing you can get is some very salty seaweed, so I really recommend to supply with enough water. Watch out this! Last week I found a real beach bar pro who was missing the bar on the sand (the closest one was a 15 or 20 minute walk), so he took out of the cooler a bottle of Estrella Galicia beer after giving the afternoon snack to his descendants. I told myself: when grown-up I wanna be like him.

If beach happens to be in a more civilized place the probabilities of finding a beach bar increase and the afternoon snack is guarantee. Sandwiches and bocadillos offer depends on how much bright the owners are. Doniños beach bar (Ferrol, Spain) used to include in its menu the Nocilla sandwich. A very nice touch.

If you go with kids, most probably is that some of them don’t eat the whole thing and there is your chance to not starve to death. Bon apetit!

P.S. I don’t dare give any advice about how to skip those three hours of after-lunch digestion process. Everything depends on how much closeness to those mom’s infatuations which we keep inside the drawer of big memories from our childhood.
